I liked Play it Safe. It's not my favorite from North. The storyline was interesting but at the beginning I couldn't relate to the H Samson. His character improved by the middle, was a completely different person by the end of the story. Angela the h was a sweet, brilliant and beautiful young woman. From the beginning Samson gave her a hard time. I loved how many times Angela played him, she pulled a few fast moves on him that I found were hilarious and he deserved 100%. I was given a copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.
I liked this second installment of the Safe House Unit series that features Samson Caine an ex-Navy SEAL, and Dr.Angela McAllister the "plain Jane" biochemist. Two people that are complete polar opposites, yet the attraction they have for each other is very unmistakable.
Rockwell Security has hired Samson to protect Angela. This was not a job Samson wanted, but was to discover that the dowdy looking woman with Nobel Prize brains had a sharp sense of humor and of the ridiculous - like a rap ringtone on her cell phone. Samson began to think that "...protecting Our Lady of the Chemical Weapon" might not be as bad as he thought, and he dubs her Madame Curie. Oh, and she is an asthmatic that keeps popping up in their lives too!
Protecting Angela is not as easy as Samson thought it would be. She is determined to free her brother Michael who has been kidnapped and tortured by Julian, a very unsavory businessman who wants Angela's "recipe for doom" for his revenge on those that brutally raped and murdered his beloved wife. Michael will die if Angela does not comply. Angela will do anything to free Michael, the brother who put his life on hold to raise her after their parents died. At first Samson doesn't get that about Angela, but he will. Her determination is fierce, and Samson knows that can only lead to trouble.
Samson and Angela head to South Africa, not exactly together, but in the same place at the same time - another determination display by Angela, and she and Samson find some interesting ways to join the "mile high" club on the long hours of the flight.
Samson lost his wife, Riley on their honeymoon to a brutal murder, and just passed the time, eased the pain with women, lots of women, until Angela. He is captivated with her, and so much more so when they finally come together as lovers.
The story moves quickly to Samson finding Michael, and almost escaping, but being caught by Manny, the boy he and Riley left behind yet loved so much who now was a boy solider holding Samson at gunpoint. Angela is caught and held by some very dangerous men who are part of Julian's Army of Hate.
It was a good, steady paced read, characters were "real" and likeable despite all the secrets and problems.
I have read stories from Leslie North before and this was a very good one.
Ex-Navy Seal Samson has lost everything he has ever had. He doesn’t want to do it, but when he is offered to help protect a biochemist who has been threatened, he takes it on. He is not prepared for Angela, or the feelings she provokes in him. He thinks that maybe, just maybe, if he can keep her safe it can make up for him not saving his wife.
Angela is a strong, intelligent, independent biochemist. She wants to get kidnapped because they have her brother and it’s the only way to save him. But she doesn’t count on Samson. Angela doesn’t follow the rules, especially when family is involved. But can she save her brother and everything Samson needs?
When rogue government officials get involved and the village where Samson wants to adopt a son are threatened, can he save them? Can he accept that he’s fallen in love and save her as well?

Needed more complicated characters

Excellent read. Leslie North took a different approach to her female character and I really enjoyed it. As always I want more.
3.5 stars Ex-SEAL Samson has his newest protection detail, biochemist Angela. I chuckled right away when Samson went into total protective mode at the bar count exit points, face the door, etc. Angela is completely book smart, but she's not always street smart. She developed a secret formula that others want to use to harm others, and they kidnap her brother to get her to spill. I had to admit, even Angela got a little MacGuyver, which I dug. This book was definitely more of an action suspense book, but it was interesting.
Samson looses everything he lives for. Throwing himself into women and work he finds himself protecting Angela. Angela has just created a biochemical weapon and is the only person with the formula. Faced with her brother being held hostage she no longer wants Sampsons protection. Can they face his past, save her brother, and build a future?
This is the second book of the series and can be read as a stand alone. I enjoyed this book. The character building with surprises. I look forward to reading any and all further books in this series. Leslie North is one of my favorite authors.
